City recently received $ 13,800 state grant for "Celebrating Kingston's Architecture," a program to promote the recognition and preservation of historic buildings and the environment, announced Landmarks Preservation Commission.
"Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to understanding the value of historic buildings," commission member Alan Baer said. "If someone does not know the historic house's history and values, is threatened by the owner of the house itself."
City of Kingston released three brochures to enlighten the population on architectural gems tucked into every corner of the city: "Preservation Guidelines," "7 Ways to Love Your Older Home" and "Historic District, Kingston NY." The brochures are available at the city planning office in City Hall, the building safety division at Garraghan Drive, Friends of Historic Kingston Museum on Main Street and Area Heritage Center on lower Broadway.
Free information workshop, "Restoring Your Older Home: How to Do It," will be offered from 9:30-1: 30 pm June 17 at the Kingston Library on Franklin Street. Local professionals will discuss the building style, color, restoration approaches, materials and where to find additional resources for recovery.
"This workshop is for anyone with an old building, even if a simple house with a little ginger on the front porch," said Suzanne Cahill from the city planning office.
Restored free tour of seven homes and commercial buildings will be offered from 9 am-noon June 24. Maps will be available from 9-10 am at the library. The Library has developed a reference in the preservation of the Local History Room that includes books, pamphlets and recovery guidelines.
