Modern AIA TAP Building Information Modeling Award Goes to Graphisoft Customer

Houston-based architectural firm Kirksey was awarded the Building Information Model in 2006 (BIM) Award for "Inspirational Pilot Project" by the American Institute of Architects Technology in Architectural Practice (AIA TAP) Knowledge Community. The Firm's winning submission, Satterfield & Pontikes Westway Office Building in Houston, designed and models with BIM process using Graphisoft ® Archicad ®, Estimator ®, and Maker ®.

Submissions are evaluated on various criteria, including: the benefits are measured in cost, schedule, or quality; interoperability between software applications; effective teamwork, the process of change, cultural change, and, the return value. Special emphasis is placed on projects in the real world and teamwork.

Set to be completed by the end of 2006, this Class A office building will be three floors, 65,000 square foot, cast-in-place concrete structures. This facility will also meet the requirements of the United States Green Building Commission's (USGBC) Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED ®) certification, ensuring good building will be sustainable and energy efficient.

Kirksey implemented exterior sunshade system designers to increase the thermal efficiency and provide glare-free views for occupants. A roof garden at the facility to reduce the heat island effect and create a beautiful garden with space for tenants. A central garden area with landscaping and benches to create a green open space for tenants and owners to use. In seeking to create a more efficient design process, design-build team worked together to use a BIM process that helped facilitate the A / E team's documentation, coordination, fabrication, cost estimating, and construction schedules.

"Archicad's collaboration and teamwork skills is key in ensuring the success of this project," said David Larrew, AIA, Director of Technology Architecture GDLA for Kirksey. "In our work with Satterfield & Pontikes, also Graphisoft client, we need a virtual building technology that will allow for easier coordination and integration of imperfect information. The tools provided by Archicad allowed for the entire design and construction team to work as one."

Founded in 1971, Kirksey specializes in architecture, interior design, master planning and sustainable design, and consulting. Consists of 11 focused practice groups - commercial, community / religion, country clubs and spas, education, government, healthcare, hospitality, interior architecture, laboratory / industrial, residential, and retail - Graphisoft companies using Archicad for the entire design. Earlier this year, the AIA Houston chapter Kirksey awarded two Honorary Award for Architecture and Sustainable Design for projects designed with Archicad.

"This award is another example of how to help the transition Graphisoft architecture industry to build a model of information," said Dominic Gallello, CEO, Graphisoft. "With Archicad, Kirksey is setting a new standard for how architectural firms can incorporate virtual building modeling technology into their practices to achieve good results and are recognized for great work."
