Finish sanding is a very important step in the process of making the best looking cabinet. The move comes after the stain is applied, but before the end of the varnish. An evenly applied sanding will produce a smooth cabinet and look professional. If it's done properly, the wood surface will not have coverage and even stains will appear lighter in some areas. In this event, the stain can be applied again but would not it quite well. Take your time when doing the finish sanding and follow these few simple tips.
The first thing you need is an electric sander. Not be large or expensive, just flexible enough to accommodate different sandpaper grits. You may consider doing it manually sanding, but I really recommend using the machine because it is difficult to sand evenly and without error. To sand thoroughly, I also would suggest a sander with a rotating brush attachment that can enter into difficult to reach the flow of the cabinet trim. This is known as three-dimensional Sanders. You'll want to choose either 220 grit or 180 grit sandpaper to do the finish sanding.
The aim is to go into the wood evenly and thoroughly. If any part of the remaining un-sanded, then the piece will look uneven. Let the sander do most of the work, and do not press too hard. Each Burr or debris should be removed in this step. One or two tickets using circular motion to get a job. Use flat sander to go to the front and side of the cabinet. Then take your circular sander and worked on the trim and molding, if you've got. The final product should look even and flush.
If you see the extreme differences in the wood surface of elevation and depression, then you do not sand correctly before you apply the stain. An area that has knots of trees can be very difficult to sand down flush with the wood face. If this happens, you will be able to return the timber of sand or use a plane to achieve a relatively smooth surface. Re-apply stain and finish sanding to do one more time.
At this point, you must cupboard looks pretty smooth with few defects. This is important because the next step is to apply the final sealer. Any imperfections will show after sealer is applied. Take a good look to check your closet from all angles before finishing the job.
