Once a household name for rattan furniture, Tegalwangi, Cirebon Regency, West Java, not the city's first.
Fierce competition, especially from products imported from China, is one of the reasons blamed for the decline and fall Tegalwangi exports.
According to the chapter chairman of Cirebon Indonesia Furniture and Handicraft Business Association, Sumartja, the city has decreased the export of rattan, from 700 containers in a container on 2005-600 September October 2005.
"During the heyday of industrial countries rattan, rattan we export up to 2,000 containers per month," he said.
He related decline of various factors, including government regulations allow the export of raw rattan, which benefits other cane producers such as China and Vietnam. "Government policies such as giving our enemies ammunition to kill us," he said.
He predicts the situation will get worse, with only about 30 of more than 120 producers of rattan are still in business. "The rest of them lost the competition and become bankrupt.
