‘Scrab’ a true treasure, as well as a landmark design

Anyone who bought property at 70 Curve St. undoubtedly will be the host of a new home. Next year, they will celebrate again in doubt, when the house turned 100 years old. A Wellesley landmark, the Katharine Lee Bates House ( "The Scarab, House of Many Treasures") is offered by Pinnacle Residential Properties. "The Scarab," built in 1907, is home to Bates, a poet, a Wellesley College professor and author of the national hymn "America the Beautiful." Houses in the National Register Historic Places,

Named after the Egyptian symbol for creativity, "The Scarab" was built under the supervision of Bates' brother, Arthur Lee Bates, when he was on leave in Switzerland, Italy, Egypt and Palestine. William H. Brainerd, Wellesley resident, is the architect.
During construction, the house was built with the front facing the back of the property. But he has such a big hall, so that does not appear that this is a mistake.
When Bates lived in "The Scarab," from 1907 until his death in 1929, the house was a gathering place for Wellesley College faculty and students, neighbors and friends. This also serves as an informal dormitory for college.
After Miss Bates died, Wellesley College has a house and has plans to turn it into a dormitory. The house remained vacant, however, until Urann Margaret and her family moved to 18-months. The house was then sold and used as a rooming house that began in the early 1940s. Owned then by Mr. and Mrs. Harold Jackson, Mr. Jackson was an employee of the Wellesley Press. After the Jacksons, Walter and Muriel Robinson owned a house for 40 years and during that time back to single family use.
Shingle eclectic style house located in the south side Curve Street. At the west end of the paved road sharp, two-car brick garage was built in 1932. This feature is an automatic door opener.
In a wooded setting, "The Scarab" is shaded by oak trees, and landscapes include rhododendrons, mountain laurel and euonymus. A garden at the rear of the property.
Rectangles, food-frame house has a raised basement. A hipped roof features two facade Gables on both sides of the north and south, and there are very wide overhanging roof next to the increase.

Built on the ledge, foundation and basement lifting piece of rough stone. Shingled exterior walls of wood, and the roof is asphalt. The house combines a variety of patio designs, including a sleeping porch on the second floor. Property sits on the 12,949-sqare-foot lot with a living space of 2825 square meters. The plan largely original interiors have been preserved. There are 11 rooms. Forced air heating, oil, and there is no central air conditioning. Wood floors look through most of the house. They had just polished. The 11-by-15-foot kitchen features lots of storage space. Shaker style cherry cabinets. Countertops are Formica, but in good condition. New owner may want to replace them with granite or other materials. They may also want to upgrade from vinyl floors in kitchen and bathroom as well.
