Sri Lanka Handicrafts Board (SLHB), together with the Tourist Hotels Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) and the Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO), has entered into a partnership to promote local, lace manufacturing industry and handicrafts in the tourists.
Travel Foundation, the UK has offered Rs. 4 million for the initial phase of this program, and many outbound tour operators from the UK and British tourists are expected to provide financial support to make this project successful, a senior official from the Ministry of Rural Industries and Self-Employment Promotion told Lankapuvath.
Under this partnership, the umbilical cord in Dikwella manufacturing will be renovated and new handicraft showrooms will be established. This will really push the existing lace weavers and train new entrants to the business.
Weavers will be trained in various aspects in order to improve the quality of the product. The agreement was signed in this regard, the Minister of Rural Industries and Self-Employment Promotion.
