Norwalk Furniture Corp. will complete the 82 pending orders when Lexington franchise of Norwalk, The Furniture Idea, closed suddenly in April, Attorney General Greg Stumbo announced yesterday.
Stores in Hamburg Place is operated by Danny Hilliard, a veteran retailer who Lexington Herald-Leader can not contact.
Attorney General received about two dozen complaints from consumers who say they have made a deposit but have not received their furniture. Some told the Herald-Leader they have made a down payment of $ 1400 or more, and a business that paid in advance for $ 17,000 in furniture. Not the total for all customers that are available.
Stumbo said Norwalk Furniture now has copies of purchase orders from the store and will notify customers in writing within seven working days of the status of their orders.
Mike Kenny, a Norwalk Vice President, said the first letter was sent yesterday and the rest will come out Tuesday and Wednesday. A copy of the invoice the customer will be included.
"This will be sufficient expenditure for Norwalk Furniture (to complete the order)," Kenny said. "The main thing is that we are able to serve current customers and they do not have to wait any longer to see what would happen."
Kenny also said there have been several questions about Lexington buying a franchise, so the company expects to have another Norwalk store open here in a few months.
In a statement, Stumbo said customers will be asked to pay the outstanding balance on their order before the furniture is produced. Norwalk is expected that delivery will occur 35-45 days after payment, depending on fabric availability.
The Company will offer home delivery for 3 percent of the invoice or $ 75, whichever is greater, but Norwalk can not charge for shipping or storage. Norwalk also must offer customers the option to take their furniture in Lexington at a location to be determined.
Consumers who do not receive a letter by June 9 to call the attorney general's Consumer Protection Division 1-502-696-5389, Stumbo said. www.kentucky.com
