Modern Pretty, compact clematis for patio pots

Raymond Evison is a man on a mission. He wants to be accessible gardening for people who wish they had a green thumb but do not have the time or expertise to call themselves a gardener. Gardeners and students together will be happy to experiment with new Evison patio clematis, a compact, low maintenance, long blooming wine designed to grow happily in containers.

Years of strong wine farm to grow no more than 3-4 meters, came to fruition for Evison and gardeners around the world. Last year Evison introduced three varieties.

This year he has three more. Cultivars are compact size makes them ideal for plantations on the deck, terrace or small garden spaces. Evison observation that gardeners and non-gardeners will both be interested in using decorative outer space has become a motivation to reduce the size of this plant.

Raymond Evison lived on the island of Guernsey, part of the Channel Islands (British crown dependency). He describes the perfect climate for growing flowers. Clematis colored clear, conspicuous flowers. For gardeners palette, they are unparalleled range: intense dark purple, which in crimsons, burgundy tones, soft and hot pink, Lavenders light and dark, and white. Many varieties of two-tone, with both subtle and dramatic color combinations. Some clematis flowers are small and simple with four petals, others have a 5 - to 7-inches with a few petals. Several types of two-color two-fold. The anthers in the middle of flowers have a contrasting color adds another dimension to the beauty of this flower bloom. When the plants finished flowering, seed ball spiral stigma, clematis unique features.

This year Evison has introduced three cultivars:

- 'Bourbon' is deep red with strong purple in the middle of the petals. Leaf color with yellow leaves that live in the middle.

- 'Angelique' with pale purple-blue flowers.

- 'Parisienne,' purple with dark red leaves in the middle.

Last year, Evison introduced:

- 'Cezanne,' with a 6 - to 7-inch purple blooms that began in early summer.

- 'Picardy,' with a 6-inch flowers are magenta with a red center line.

- 'Versailles' is mostly purple with a red line in the middle of the petals. Center pink leaves, white and red. Produce beautiful flowers from May to September. Plants have been raised to be a long blooming, disease resistant and low maintenance.

Patio clematis plants in ceramic pots to insulate their roots from heat and cold. Use the pan is not shorter than 12 inches, and ideally about 15 inches at the top. Use nutrient-rich soil pots. I usually pan with 2 / 3 to 1 / 3 ratio earthen pot for chicken manure. After the first shock of interest on my dress the soil with a thin layer of chicken manure, or patio clematis can be given a monthly increase of food, as recommended by Evison.

Clematis should be kept moist, but their roots must be protected from poor drainage. Add beans or pebbles small stones down to ensure drainage planters. Lift legs to allow air crop farmers under the pot. A trellis must be provided for the vine to climb.

Clematis like to grow together with other plants, some to keep their roots cool and others to provide a scaffold to grow. Get creative by adding plants that grow low to the pot to provide greater protection clematis roots. Using potted clematis are invited to play with color and texture by adding plants with leaves that are very different as succulents, grass or plants. Flowers such as sweet alyssum, which will be beyond the edge of the pot, is ideal because they will not interfere with clematis screen.

At the end of the planting season, trimming back Evison show by taking the wine in his hand and gave him a 6-inch ponytail cut. In freeze-free environment outside the home can still clematis in pots. Where to get the temperature below freezing, the plants should be brought in the room.

I attended a presentation given by Evison recently. Description of the breeding process painstakingly fascinated me. Home clematis he began breeding in 1995. The process begins with about 2500 cultivars of cross-pollination. Those who produce the seeds stored. About 25,000 seeds sown. They germinate slowly, produces about 6,000 seeds.

This developed into flowering stage, and a very selective process to reduce the amount of approximately 200 new cultivars. This is then planted in pots larger than that only 10 percent maintained for more breeding. The plant is cultivated for several years to observe the quality and selected for traits that you like, including flowers, long blooming, disease resistant, stem size and color desired. Only after such a serious effort to use the plant for commercial production.

With more than 45 years of experience growing clematis, Evison increased 4.6 million clematis a year, supplying 25 percent of the world market and exporting plants to 20 countries. At peak production in April and May, 25 employees making 45,000 pieces a day. He has introduced more than 100 species and cultivars for gardeners clematis.

Officer Raymond Evison was awarded the prestigious Order of British Empire by Queen Elizabeth for his services to horticulture. Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria was also awarded him the Medal of Honor for his contributions British horticulture. www.sfgate.com
