A survey of domestic furniture manufacturers found that the command March 3 percent higher than the previous year, and 8 percent higher than in February this year.

The survey, by High Point consulting and accounting firm BDO Seidman, also found that the command completed delivery rose 3 percent over March last year, and rose 17 percent during February. March is traditionally a better month for producers of furniture in February.

New orders for the first quarter were 5 percent above year-ago period. Shipping in the first quarter rose about 2 percent this year compared to last.

Factory payrolls fell 2 percent in March 2006 versus 2005, but 13 percent higher than in February. The number of factory employees was flat from February to March, but the numbers fell 4 percent in March from a year earlier.

Summary analysis of business survey results as a whole is called "spotty."

"While the business is being done and the mood of the (The International Home Furnishings) market looks better than expected, not only real consistency for the current business conditions," the analysis said.
