Handicrafts made by Felda settlers could one day make inroad into Harrods in London if they are unique, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He threw a personal challenge to Felda craft entrepreneurs to make their products as unique and special as possible so that they can be exported.
"I want to Felda craft entrepreneurs and businessmen to lead the industry." You must make your product is commercially attractive and create a good brand name to increase your sales.
"It's my hope that years from now, Felda will be able to market their handicraft products in Harrods," said Najib, who launched Felda craft gallery and a book of craft products at Kraf Complex here yesterday.
He was accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
In the last month, Felda's "one area, one industry" has been recorded programs RM2.19mil in product sales.
"It is expected that about 5,000 settlers will be involved in the handicraft industry in the next five years," said Najib.
He added that Felda will build 20 centers supply during the Ninth Malaysia Plan period to help the settlers to market handicraft products, called Modern Malaysia.
Felda now has 11 craft-making and supply centers, which produce 52 types of products.
"Felda dry and frozen foods with the commercial name F-Best Foods which have been successfully marketed in Singapore, Australia and Dubai, and will be sold in China next month," he added.
Earlier, in Shah Alam, Najib said, Malaysia's stand on Iraq will always be consistent.
"Our stand is that the sovereignty of each country should be respected," Najib told reporters after the launch of Rural and Regional Development Department of Rural Human Capital Development Program.
He added that if a country must be attacked, the UN resolutions and the provisions of international law must be followed.
Najib was responding to questions related to U.S. President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair's joint recognition that their attitude in Iraq may not be true.
Bush also admitted that he most regrets error saying "bring 'em on" when responding in July 2003 to a question about the Iraqi resistance.
On another matter, Najib said that 219 members of the Malaysian Armed Forces had gone to serve in East Timor yesterday.
"They left the three planes and arrived in East Timor with security in today's 6:30," said Najib, who is also Minister of Defense.
Strength, he said, would be placed at airports and ports as well as important buildings such as government offices and embassies.
"Our personnel will serve in East Timor with the Australian armed forces under the UN sanctions mission," he added. thestar.com.my
