Local edge over China’s furniture designs

FURNITURE products from China is losing popularity because of inconsistent quality.

Penang Furniture Manufacturers and Dealers Association (PFMDA) president Yeoh Ee Wan says local producers now have the advantage over their Chinese competitors because there is excess supply of furniture from China.

"Our members compete more effectively against imports of furniture by producing quality products with innovative design.

"Penang furniture manufacturers contributed about 15% of the total revenues generated by sales of furniture made in Malaysia in foreign countries," Yeoh said the launch of the Penang Furniture Exhibition 2006 (PENFURNEX) PFMDA held at headquarters in Seberang Jaya on Thursday.

Three-day exhibition, organized by PFMDA and sponsored by national governments, Entre-preneur Malaysia Furniture Association, and the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce, will be held from September 1 at the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA).

Present to launch the event was the state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Lau Chiek Tuan.

"Fifteen local furniture company has booked about 50% of the 180 kiosks are available at the exhibition.

"We expect another 45 furniture companies to place orders to stand with us," said Yeoh.

Lau said the furniture industry in the state plays a very important role in contributing to the country's economy.

"There are more than 600 furniture companies in the state, where 220 is a member of PFMDA.

"This plant creates many jobs and business opportunities for downstream furniture business," he said.

Lau said the exhibition will provide local furniture producers the opportunity to promote and market their products.
