Furniture set the tone for relaxed living on the porch

Thinking of the family was packing for vacation required? Think again. The streets are full of holes and the pressure from your back seat will fight for mercy before you can reveal the map. If you really want to relax, look no further than the porch of your own backyard.

"Outdoor living room bigger," said Cory Curtis, a patio and casual furniture store manager in Okemos, Mich. "People are not traveling as much anymore, and they want to add another room to take a vacation at home."

Do you prefer casual or fancy, choice of furniture sets the tone.

THE ESSENTIALS

Most people are concerned with comfort and looks when buying patio furniture. "We asked them how many people they need to sit, how they want to use the space and what is important to them," said Curtis.

Some people realize that they needed the table, while others just want a place to sit where they can relax. Remember, Curtis says, "You can start with a few basic pieces and add on when you leave."

DESIGN

Like the decor, the design must be in accordance with the family lifestyle, said Curtis. Patio furniture comes in a variety of finish, each with a series of aesthetic and maintenance issues.

"Wicker is nostalgia," said Curtis. But today over possible wicker left outside the house without risk of damage, and never needs painting.

For those who want a natural look may prefer a bench or a teak table, although the treatment may be a bit more problematic.

EXTRAS

Once you determine the basic look of the room, consider making it a true vacation destination.

"Gazebos hot," says Kelly Haddock, executive team leader for Target stores.

"The fire bowl and the actual outside fireplace are also popular this year," Haddock said. "We sell a blanket for them, so they do not rust if not used."

Add an umbrella to your dining table, or use it as a standalone tent in the sitting area. Complete the look with an outdoor area rug, some plants and fountains.

Luxe LIFE

If your budget allows for custom patio design, consider including an outdoor kitchen with built-in grill, side burner, sink and refrigerator.

"People are now cook outside all year," said Curtis. "This brings the family back together again."

Add the hot tub into the mix, and you may never leave the comfort of your own back yard again. www.clarionledger.com
