Hurricane Maria asked readers to send messages about the new house to come tour. She and her husband bought a new home in Hickory, and wanted to visit the model and showhouses to get ideas for decorations and furnishings.
Apparently Hickory area builder hosting a Parade Homes this weekend, and is open weekends in Charlotte HomeArama. You will find more information on today at the Home page Calendar 10H.
In addition, it turns out, Hurricane is borrowing ideas from the furniture manufacturer, who regularly tour the new house models.
The people at the Broyhill Drexel Heritage and told me the model homes they visit on their way. In the showroom at Century Furniture in High Point furniture market recently, I asked if he Ed Tashjian tourism model. "All the time," he said. "We learned a lot."
What they learned, of course, is to develop pieces of furniture - and the shape and size - that complement today's homes and lifestyles.
Entertainment cabinet that will be seen from the Lofts on the second floor a large room above must be completed. Townhouse and condominium demand clean lines and compact scale.
If you will tour a model for inspiration, be sure to record more than colors and patterns. Take your meter, for example. Measure the chair that fits comfortably into the corner of the main room model. How do I compare the size of your favorite chair at home? Model designers often choose smaller furniture to make rooms appear larger.
Note the "footprints" of the chest and dressing table. Some of the higher design, offering the same storage but takes less floor space. That not only works well with today's ceiling is higher, but also can make the room appear larger.
Taking notes as you go. Appropriate information will be very helpful when you go shopping or when you try to recreate the look you admire in your favorite model.
Bluebird house wrecking
First round the back yard with a lawn mower, I saw a bird nest in a natural fertilizer in the region. It looked recently, but I kept cutting. On the second pass, I realized that the flip-down front bluebird house was open slightly.
A closer look shows that some creatures had opened the front of the box and dragged out of the nest.
The house was cut by many scratches, but it did not gnaw around the hole as a squirrel may have. And squirrels may not be strong enough to pull open the front through metal doorstop. A raccoon, maybe.
We had bluebird houses for decades and never attracted raccoons. (Snakes, yes - raccoons, no.)
Quick visits to a number of Web sites bluebird explain one reason why. A wooden box on the posting when I'm stuck on the ground in a hurry one day at dusk Saturday. Our mailbox had previously been installed on metal pipe - and raccoons shinnying difficulty of metal.
I plan to transfer the house to pipe this weekend. It's quite easy to install guards, confusing - and a pipe - to help keep predators at bay.
The larger lesson, if we will offer lodging for Bluebirds we must be good landlords. www.charlotte.com
