Five things to know about the scale and the small house

Here's the premise: You have a comfortable, but not grandiose, home / condo / apartment. And, yes, you are often 8-foot ceiling - when most new construction seems to be 9 feet or higher. And most of the furniture in stores today (even the mattresses) seems to be productive the same route. How do you decorate without strong? How do you make your room feel bigger and higher?

We turned to Chicago interior designer Arlene Semel to several rooms with thoughts on a small scale in places and a few tricks to get it right:

1. Bedrooms. With the emergence of extra-bed, bed can take a room in one bite. Consider forgoing the dramatic headboard. "Anyway European Shams," larger than standard Shams, "and leaned against a pillow on the wall" to create a sense of completion, "a makeover of the bed." The pillows will give you more flexibility than the head of the bed. Tasks and using lights on the bedside table instead of a big lamp with a color.

2. Family room / living room. The aim is to reduce the proportion of what you enter here, while still making a large room on comfort, Semel said. Modernism low couch, which stood 30-32 inches from the floor with arms that measure 24-25 inches high, the right scale - but not always the right comfort level. There is little support for the shoulder 30-32 inches. Instead of choosing to higher sofa, search for one with a pillow which rose 2 inches (or more) on the back, Semel said. Or add a high pillow to the back of the existing low-rise sofa. That way, you get comfort / support without the extra bulk.

Do not use high light. Floor lamps should stand no taller than 64 inches. A table lamp also can not rise more than 64 inches (counting table and high light).

Do not buy a high entertainment center. "For what the cost of the cabinet, put your money into a flat screen TV technology."

And, it's OK to do cabinets / bookcases that stretch to the ceiling. Go along the road will provide a high sense of space and you, more storage space. But also consider the 6 - or 7-feet-high. Then "placing objects on top - which creates high in a more open way."

3. Dining room. Leaning 7 - to 7 ½-foot-high mirror wall (slope it out from the wall a few inches, but make sure it is attached and ready; may use a professional to install). Or, wait for 4 ½ feet tall mirror above the buffet, which stands 36 inches or more. "You will change the visual proportions of the room" with a mirror, Semel said. "This design tricks." It's like the little black dress that makes her feel thin. "You put the mirror in the room, and feel better. It would be great. It's higher."

4. Kitchen. This is where you violate the rule that does not draw attention to the ceiling. Take your closet along the way, if you can, Semel said. "You get extra storage space, and it gives a higher feeling of space."

5. Miscellaneous: entry and windows. Do not put off the lights in the input. Keep it ceiling mounted. And, do not disrupt space - try one chair or one long low bench with a series of small drawings or photographs hung on it.

And the whole house, "one way to make the ceiling appear higher is to have the curtain go all the way up to the ceiling," said Semel. Hang your rod as close as possible to the ceiling as possible. If you are on traverse curtain rod, hanging rod high enough to get the fold (above the rod) as close to the ceiling as possible. www.duluthsuperior.com
