A painting by Chinese artist Chu-chun making the 3.2 million dollars at auction in Hong Kong Sunday, underscoring the growing appetite worldwide for Asian art.
The inky black and red "Rouge, La Pluie sur le village de eyelids; Blanc, Le Nuage au-dessus de la maison No. 53", painted in 1960, sold more than six times the asking price of 512,000 dollars.
Auctioneer Christie's said, the sales record for the work by Chu, who is considered one of the greatest masters of modern China.
The works of modern Asian artists are also taking a higher price than expected.
"Flowers in a Bright Yellow Vase" by Chinese artist Sanyu (1901-1966) was sold for 2.7 million dollars and "Garden" by fellow Chinese painter Liao Chi-chun (1902-1976) went to 2:18 million dollars.
In a few years Hong Kong has followed Tokyo as the focus of Asian art market, driven primarily by the emergence of wealthy Chinese.
